Abstract


The purpose of this study was to evaluate tissue reaction to X-ray irradiation around
implant fixtures used in dental clinic. The thread type of the pure titanium fixture and
the titanium plasma spray fixture with 3.8§® in diameter, 8§® in length in Steri-Oss
system was chosen. Implants were placed in femoral bone of the dog and irradiated
with single 15Gy dose on the 10th postoperative day. Tissue reaction around the
implants was examined with the digital imaging analysis, the mobility test with periotest
and the histological examination at 4,8,16 weeks after implantation.
The obtained results were as follows:
1.Under the examination of the light microscopy and Laser confocal microscopy, the
maturity of the surrounding bone tissue around the implant fixture was formed rapidly
with the lapse of time at the non-irradiated group, but the maturity of bone formation
was delayed, the amount of new bone formed was less, and specially even at the
remodeling stage the surrounding bone tissue around the implant fixture was damaged
severely at the irradiated group.
2. Under the examination of the light microscopy and Laser confocal microscopy, the
reaction of the bone tissue around the titanium plasma spray implant fixture compared
with the pure titanium implant fixture was more activated, and more showed by the
maturity of bone formation at both the irradiated group and the non-irradiated group.
3.As a result of the mobility test with the periotest, the mobility of the implant fixture
was reduced without respect to the irradiation, but the reduction width of the mobility
of the irradiated group was less compared with the non-irradiated group, that is, the
irradiation was the result of the harmful effect to the surrounding bone tissue around
the implant fixture.
4. There was no specific differences of the mobility between the titanium plasma spray
implant fixture and the pure titanium implant fixture, but the mobility of the titanium
plasma spray implant fixture was less compared with the pure titanium implant fixture,
that is, the implant fixture of the rough surface with the wide contact to the
surrounding bone provided the good stability to the implant.
